Write the Legacy of Your Life With a Gift in Your Will
If you were to pass a person homeless on the street or meet a neighbour desperate for food or had a family member struggling with addiction, you would probably want to help. Your instinct to extend the hand of friendship to your neighbours in need is the purpose behind the decision of many friends of House of Friendship to leave legacies with gifts in their Wills. Through good times and bad, their generosity continues to help, and with a gift in your will, you too can leave a similar footprint and continue to be there when needed in the future.

Through a gift in your Will you can:
- Create your meaningful legacy with a sense of purpose – Making a gift in your will ensures that your wishes are honoured; your support for the causes that are closest to you and to your family’s hearts can continue long into the future
- Ensure your peace of mind – Creating a Will is the only way to ensure that your loved ones and the causes that you love are taken care of in the way you intend
- Conveniently convey your wishes – A gift in your Will is easy to arrange and can be made for any amount you wish – a specific amount, a percentage/residual portion or a contingent bequest, and changed at any time
If you have yet to make a Will, please speak with your loved ones and professional financial and legal advisors. If you already have a will, you can speak with your family and advisors about adding a codicil (a brief instruction that is added to your will to reflect your updated wishes). By leaving a gift in your Will you will give help and hope tomorrow.
Making a gift to the Friendship Endowment Fund
In 1995 House of Friendship established the Friendship Fund to fund community ministry. It is an endowment fund where the capital is not spent, but the interest income is used to support community outreach in perpetuity to those in need. The Friendship Fund is managed for House of Friendship by the Abundance Canada.
Honouring Your Legacy
House of Friendship’s General Capital reserve fund is a long-standing fund that is used to purchase and maintain properties for programs. Income from this fund helps develop and maintain the properties needed to fulfill House of Friendship’s mission. Unless otherwise directed by you, the donor, one-time gifts in Wills/legacy gifts are placed by the Board of Directors into either the General Capital Fund or the Friendship Fund and are not used for annual operating purposes. Other ways to leave a legacy include trust deposits, shares and mutual funds, life insurance and gift annuities. Please discuss with your loved ones and personal professional advisors what works best for you.
