Charles Village

Charles Village is permanent, supportive housing for 22 single adults (both women and men). Tenants live independently in their own apartments. It is affordable housing where all tenants have subsidized rent (geared to their incomes). Staff work with tenants to promote community life in the building and help them connect to other services from which they might benefit.

Charles Village is centrally located in downtown Kitchener close to public transit, retail shops, the Farmers' Market and other services. The building has a unique geo-thermal heating and cooling system that maximizes tenant comfort and minimizes energy costs.

Charles Village is...

  • Supportive, permanent affordable housing - where 22 single adults (both women & men) live independently in a community setting

  • non-profit housing where all apartments are Rent-Geared-to-Income, subsidized by the Region of Waterloo Rent Supplement program

  • An attractive, well-maintained, three-storey building with 22 one-bedroom unites, including two wheelchair accessible units. Common aread include a lounge, a multi-purpose room, laundry and bike room

  • centrally-located in downtown Kitchener close to transit, retail shops, the Farmers' Market and other services

  • a building with an eco-friendly geo-thermal heating and cooling system that maximizes tenant comfort and minimizes energy costs and environmental impact

Eligibility Criteria

  • be a Canadian citizen or have made a claim for permanent resident or refugee claimant status

  • be a single, 16 years old of age or older and able to live on your own

  • qualify for Community Housing through the Regin of Waterloo Community Housing Access Centre

Program Objectives

  • to improve the ability of the tenants to live independentely wit success through the development of their life-skills

  • to develop a community setting that emphasizes the concepts of mutual support and individual responsibility

  • to develop the social skills and self-confidence of the tenants by involving them in decision-making regarding the operation of the building and the program, and encouraging their participation in the community

  • to created and sustain relationships with other agencies and the community to support and advocate for tenants

Community Life

  • All tenants are members of the Tenant Council. Tenants and staff promote social activities and community life within the building.

  • Tenants are encouraged to participate in community life within the building, in the neighbourhood and beyond.
