The Live and Learn program provides support for women and their preschool children who are living on a limited income.
Live & Learn Program
The Live and Learn Program is a community based program that provides support and development opportunities for women and their preschool children, who are living on a limited income.
Women meet together for cooking, crafts, speakers, outings and community service projects. Parenting courses are also offered. While the mothers meet, care and creative play are provided for their infants, toddlers and preschoolers by staff and volunteers. Live and Learn staff also offer individual support through regular phone contact and home visits.
The Live and Learn Program runs from September to June. Three groups meet weekly in Kitchener-Waterloo on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:15 pm-3:15 pm. Each group includes up to 10 women and their preschool children. Interested women may refer themselves or be referred by other individuals or agencies. When needed, transportation is provided.

Donations
Live and Learn receives some funding from United Way of K-W and the Townships of Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich. However the majority of the financial support comes from churches, community groups and individual donations (both monetary and gifts-in-kind).
History & Affiliations
Live & Learn is one of House of Friendship's five Family Services Program. House of Friendship is a Christian non-profit human service agency founded in 1939 that provides addiction treatment services, community services, family services and residential services to over 34,000 people annually in the Waterloo Region
In the early 1970's, House of Friendship staff and board members were keenly aware of the challenges faced by women with preschool children who were living on a limited income with few supports. Ideas on how to address these needs were discussed only casually at that time, when House of Friendship's ministry was primarily geared to men. Then in 1974, a proposal for the Live & Learn Program was brought to the House of Friendship Executive Committee. It was approved for a trial period. In 1999, we celebrated our 25th anniversary.
Although the Live & Learn program has grown and evolved over the years, its goal and much of its format have not changed. The goal of Live & Learn continues to be to provide support and personal development opportunities to women with preschool children who live on a limited income with limited supports.
Referrals to the program most often come from Family & Children's Services, Regional Social Services, Public Health and current and former group members.
